Shifting Perspectives
Retirement Planning
We're often approached by individuals who are planning for retirement and aren't sure how to bring the various pieces of their portfolio together to create a cohesive whole.
One such individual came to us after retiring from a firm that he had founded more than 40 years earlier. A prominent local businessman, he also sat on the board of directors of an important financial services institution.
We performed a careful analysis of his stock from both his own business and the financial services institution, and prepared a customized report for him that laid out all of his assets and sources of income, and made suggestions about how to best consolidate them. Then we coordinated that information with his estate planning, to help him decide how the assets should be held.
The businessman was delighted to have his options explained so clearly, but we soon noticed that his wife wasn't looking quite as pleased. When we asked if there was something that she wasn't comfortable with, she blurted out, "For 30 years, he's had a salary that I've helped manage. I just don't understand where the money is going to come from now!" We helped her understand that there would still be a regular paycheck—it was just coming from a different source.
In many cases, we help people through the most important financial transitions of their lives.
